Conservatism and Defense Spending

November 30, 2012 0 Comments

This morning on my way to work I was surprised to hear Mike Gallagher attacking Rand Paul for suggesting that Republicans trade off defense spending cuts for cuts to entitlement spending. Since when is military spending sacrosanct to American conservatism?

Here is a video of Rand Paul’s interview with Anderson Cooper on CNN. Take a listen to Rand’s statements; I think that he does a great job defending conservative principles.

Now let’s get back to whether conservatives should be against any spending cuts. A deeply held belief of conservatives is that government misspends a lot of money. Why wouldn’t we question the Pentagon about its spending? I am sure the military has asked for spending that is not needed. And, conservatives should hold the military accountable for its spending.

Conservatives rightly honor our military men and women as heroes, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t demand them to spend money wisely. We need to make sure our troops have the equipment and training they need to win, but at the same time cut wasteful spending. Out of the $600,000,000,000 defense budget, there has to be some room to cut spending.
